In October of 2019, I joined PuzzleHR, a start- up HR consulting company of 7 people. I had to quickly find ways to reach centers of influence to generate leads to grow our business and a friend invited me to his Tysons Core chapter. After visiting two other chapters, I found my home at the Tysons B2B in late November. In Q1 of 2020, I stepped into the VP role, because an opportunity arose. I wanted to be the best VP because anything worth doing is worth doing well, so I visited multiple chapters to see how other VPs were contributing to their chapters. I’m glad I did, because I met other like-minded professionals in those chapters and made great connections with their visitors.
Then in person meetings came to a screeching halt in March 2020 due to COVID. The world of networking changed forever. NeXco was quick to respond by providing an engaging agenda for the online meetings and has grown its membership because of its ability to pivot and structure the meeting so that guests and members were able to interact respectfully and with purpose. Since the meetings were virtual, I was able to attend other chapters and connect with even more people. In 2020, I had 72 1:1s, passed 32 referrals, closed 13 referrals out 26 received and invited 18 guests.
So far in 2021 I have had 104 1:1s, passed 51 referrals, invited 19 guests, and closed 23 businesses. One of which came from a cross chapter referral that led to my biggest sale YTD. I also became the President of our chapter in Q1.
If not for neXco, the pandemic would probably have been a whole lot more challenging for me, because I work remotely. This community of high caliber professionals kept me focused on growing my business because of the introductions to COIs, business opportunities and the genuine support I receive from our members. Like anything in life, to get the results you want have to put in the work. Take on a leadership role because you may be the reason someone joins the chapter or makes their biggest sale from an introduction you made.

I embrace the abundance mindset of the neXco National community. I met Sid Abrahms of NonProfit HR in December 2021 and had a subsequent 1:1 which led to a better understanding of who he is as a leader of his organization and his role in business development. We geeked out on HR, and gained better insight into our respective differentiators. Some may consider us competitors, but we both agreed that we can support one another because there are going to be nuances in the HR space and client needs that would allow us to refer one another.
Just in the short 90 days since meeting Sid, he has introduced PuzzleHR to 7 prospects, and two of them have become clients. Additionally, we weren’t able to help one of the prospects that Sid referred, but I was able to reach out to a COI that Stephanie Eberhardt, another neXco National member, introduced me to. I referred the business to that COI, who was able to help the prospect immediately. The prospect was grateful for the cascading referral and complemented Sid on his network.
Take the time to welcome new members and get to know them; be a true consultant for your clients and your community. On the surface, you may look like competitors, but when you take the time to have meaningful discoveries in your 1:1, you’ll find that there’s plenty of business to share!
